Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah and coincides with the completion of Hajj. It commemorates the great sacrifice of Ibrahim (AS) when he was commanded to sacrifice his son Ismail (AS) — and both submitted to Allah's will.
The ritual of Qurbani (sacrifice) is performed, with the meat distributed in three parts: one for the family, one for relatives and friends, and one for the poor and needy.
Muslims begin the day with Eid prayer, followed by the sacrifice (which can be done over three days — the Days of Tashreeq), and celebrate with family and community.
