Quran & Science (القرآن والعلم)

Embryology in the Quran

The Quran describes the stages of human embryonic development in remarkable detail: 'We created man from an extract of clay. Then We made him a drop in a firm lodging. Then We made the drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump, and We made the lump into bones, and We covered the bones with flesh.' (Surah Al-Mu'minun 23:12-14)

This description, revealed 1,400 years ago, aligns with discoveries made by modern embryology only in the 20th century. Professor Keith Moore, a leading embryologist, acknowledged that this description could only come from divine revelation.

The Expanding Universe

The Quran states: 'And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander.' (Surah Adh-Dhariyat 51:47)

This verse points to the expansion of the universe — a fact discovered by Edwin Hubble in 1929 through the observation of redshift in distant galaxies. The discovery that the universe is expanding is one of the most significant scientific findings of the 20th century.

The Protective Atmosphere

Allah says: 'And We made the sky a protected ceiling, but they turn away from its signs.' (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:32)

The Earth's atmosphere protects life by absorbing harmful ultraviolet radiation, burning up meteoroids, and maintaining temperatures suitable for life. This 'protected ceiling' was described in the Quran centuries before modern science understood the atmosphere's protective functions.

Barrier Between Seas

The Quran describes a phenomenon where two bodies of water meet but do not mix: 'He released the two seas, meeting side by side. Between them is a barrier so neither transgresses.' (Surah Ar-Rahman 55:19-20)

Oceanographers have discovered that when two different bodies of water meet, there is a homogeneous 'barrier' (called a halocline or thermocline) that maintains the distinct properties of each sea. This was unknown at the time of revelation.

The Origin of Life from Water

'And We made from water every living thing. Then will they not believe?' (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:30)

Modern biology confirms that water is essential for all known forms of life. The cytoplasm — the basic substance of all living cells — is composed primarily of water. The Quran's statement that all life originated from water is a profound insight revealed centuries before this scientific understanding.
